On Magickal Theory: Part Two

Of primary importance in the practice of magick is the intent of the magician.  This focused desire of the magician is sometimes referred to as the Magickal Will, and if this is lacking in any respect, there can be no real success in any magickal workings.  In fact, if the magician’s intent is distracted by negative emotions or thoughts (such as doubt or uncertainty) while in the process of raising and charging energies, the subsequent culmination and release can produce negative magickal results ranging from the spell simply not working at all, to the spell “backfiring,” or any number of unwanted results.

Some magicians find that rituals, ceremonies, and symbolism can aid in the development and focus of the Magical Will by associating various mystical aspects with physical acts.  For example: when the Ancients learned that the path of Venus traces a pentagram in the sky, they began to use the pentagram as a symbol of magick and the Divine.  The human body has five limbs, which when posed as DaVinci’s “Vetruvian Man,” looks very much like a pentagram.  These synchronicities suggest that Man is inherently connected to the Divine/the Cosmos and is thus a sort of Microcosmos or Universe in miniature.  In this context, the pentagram becomes a simple visible reminder of this somewhat more complex idea.  The purpose of many rituals and ceremonies is that every act has mystical implications, which are meant as visible reminders of various aspects of magick, the Universe, and the Divine.  This concept can be summed up in the occult belief that “like attracts like,” which states that energies in the spiritual planes are drawn to similar energies on the physical planes.

Science tells us that certain actions produce certain results.  This is also true in magick—when one performs certain magickal workings with a certain frame of mind, certain results will follow.  When certain rituals are performed often, it can create pathways, which are more easily accessed by performing the same or even similar rituals.  This is another reason that some magickal groups utilize ritual and ceremony in their magickal workings—to develop specific pathways in order to help in attaining specific results.
