Occult Symbolism of Summoning Spirits

There are several grimoires concerning the Dark Arts.  (Some of the most notable include the Books of Solomon, the Grand Grimoire, the Black Pullet, the Grimoire Verum, & the Necronomicon.) Whatever the source, the goal is essentially the same: to conjure forth--either by invocation or evocation--some form of demonic (or even in some cases angelic) entity which is then given charge by the magician to bring some change into effect.  There also
exist similar practices found in Necromancy, but this is not a matter for the current subject.

The grimoires tell us that the magician practices these arts with such terrible risks as loss of soul or Essence, loss of sanity, loss of family & friends, etc.  This is not altogether untrue--if the magician is not properly experienced and his/her Will is not developed enough; if the magician makes even the slightest error in the ritual, or in the use of ritual
tools, or in the incantations, etc., he/she risks throwing the entire process into chaos.  Horrible consequences such as demonic possession, mental illness, or any of the afore mentioned risks can very likely occur.

These possible consequences--and even the possible rewards--are due to the character of the Entities being summoned.  (Even angelic entities match these characteristics.) Some Beings are thought forms, egregories, & so forth, which have been created by centuries of mass belief.  Others seem to have existed since before time immemorial.  Still others are believed to be outward expressions of latent Powers, abilities, & Forces that lie
deeply hidden within the Unconscious mind. In the end, however, it is of very little importance "how" or "why" such beings exist.  They simply Are; this is the reason it is not untrue when one receives warning of potentially
grave risks or hears another speaking loftily of potentially awesome rewards which can be acquired with the proper Will.

(I have not included Necromancy above because of the fact that the magician is attempting to summon spirits of the deceased.  It is possible that even these spirits share some of the characteristics above, but in necromancy it is much more likely that the magician will come into contact with an actual "ghost" or "astral shell."  This is not to say
that it is a "safer" art, as the risks involved are essentially the same; merely that the entities summoned forth differ--if only slightly.)
