Mythology

Foundations

No matter where in the world you travel one thing remains unchanged. All regions, all peoples, have their own foundations in mythology. Tales of ancient deities and mortals with extraordinary talents make up much of the history of the world. It would seem, on closer inspection, that society itself was founded on the ideals set forth within these ancient tales. Perhaps they are merely stories to teach life’s lessons, but if this were true then why are so many of them so similar despite their differing regions of creation?

Introductions

Now, most of what I have to say is based on my own research and beliefs based on my meager 9 years of study. Mythology is one of my passions and I have pursued what knowledge I could find in all forms and all places. I offer up my opinions and my findings to any who would seek them out and I offer them openly without restraint. I firmly believe that anyone with an open mind has the right to knowledge and if it is pursued it deserves to be discovered. My strongest areas are Greek, Egyptian, Celtic and Norse Myth, however, I am a student and I do what I can to research about many different faiths and their ancient legends.

Myth and Religion

I have found that the world is filled with amazing tales and each of them has a lesson, whether it is hidden within the twists and turns of an epic poem or lying just beneath the surface of a fable. Mythology covers far more then simply tales of ancient gods but it encompasses any form of legend or story from our past that no one can prove true or false. In one thousand years the stories of our world may very well be considered myth. Further, when you consider things from varying religious standpoints you will see the world of Myth in different lights.

For example; Christianity teaches that the Bible is the only truth in regard to the Beginning, to worship, and to the Higher Power. Thus to the Christian faith Zeus, Hera, all gods of the Greek world are simply beings of Myth, stories told by a people not yet brought into the light of the Christian God. Now look at the flip side of that coin. The followers of the ancient Greek beliefs consider that their religion, Zeus and Hera and all the others are their deities. To them it is not merely Mythology but their Religious history and thus it would be safe to think the stories of the Bible are considered myth in their eyes.

It is safe to say that one mans Religion is another mans Mythology. It is simple to find similar qualities in many ancient myths from all around the world when you know where to look. The gods themselves have similar qualities from one Faith to the next. Zeus is the High God of Greek Myth, the Father if you will, born of a Titan, he is the King of the Gods and father to many, wielding a lightning bolt to strike down at the earth. Now look at Odin of Norse Myth. Again he seems to be in the Lead position, king of the Gods and he too wields a lightning bolt. In some depictions both men are shown with white beards and are strong men with well defined body types. But in such things as appearance there is always going to be variation depending on where you search and who you talk to.

There are similarities wherever you look, all you need to do is find the corresponding deities and you will see just how similar they are to one another. This works also with gods comparing to angels, demons, even saints. Brigit, a Celtic Goddess, was turned into a saint by the Catholic Church when they were attempting the assimilation of the Celts into their ranks. This seemed a common practice throughout history, one religion enveloping and altering the other to make it a part of the same faith. This has altered much throughout the world making it near impossible to find the true roots of a faith without extensive and costly research.

My Offering

It is my intent to answer any questions brought forth in the best way that I can. I do not claim to be an expert as I do not believe any one person can be considered such in this particular field. But I do offer what knowledge I do have based on what I have learned and will learn in my lifetime. I am always available for open discussion on this topic and admit when I am wrong without pride or difficulty. This is but the beginning and I can guarantee there will be more detailed, more precise offerings in the future as while Mythology is one of my loves, so is writing.

My name is Jolene and I offer what I can of myself in this endeavor.
