The Ten Commandments are a covenant between the Jewish people and God.  These Commandments are also known as the Decalogue or in Hebrew Devarim.

Judaism is not the only religion to have commandments, as ancient Babylon and Egypt both had them.  In Babylon they were known as Lex Talionis or The Law of Retaliation and gave rise to the Eye for an Eye phrase, as they literally believed that retribution should be exactly the same as the crime.  Egypt’s commandments were called The Protestation of Guiltness, and had a few similar to the Jewish ones.
