DO WILD BEASTS ROAM BRITAIN

For many years there have been sightings of strange creatures in the British Isles, for example the Beast of Exmoor that is said to be a latter day hound of the Baskervilles type creature.  These creatures now encompass strange cats, dogs, lions, pumas, cheetahs, leopards and panthers.  There is also evidence of other out of place creatures such as wallabies in Derbyshire, beavers, raccoons and even sightings of arctic foxes.  There are many cases of these creatures and most counties and towns have their own.  Another example is where I grew up in Cheshire there were a few sightings of what is believed to have been either a crocodile or alligator in a nearby quarry.

Many of these creatures probably owe their existence in the wild to the 1976 British Animal Act which introduced stricter controls on large dangerous animals being kept in captivity, yet all the accounts cannot be dismissed as such creatures.  Many sightings have been reported previously to this date, so this does not assist in helping to find if they have been here for long periods or not.

There are now probably thousands of sightings that have been made of these creatures and without a doubt more that have not been publicised or reported.  There are many sceptics out there that doubt these creatures roam our countryside and try to insinuate that these people have misconceived the creatures they were seeing due to distance or lack of light for them to clearly see.  This however, may explain some sightings but cannot explain them all.

Many of these sightings cannot be dismissed that easily as farmers have had livestock killed by them as well as seeing them.  In fact now many other people have either seen them or believe them to be real.  The majority of these people have no reason to tell lies regarding these sightings and have good checkable backgrounds.  Many photographs have also been taken of these animals, but do not conclusively prove their existence, but now a photograph taken in Gwent may aid to support the idea of large cats like panthers and pumas roaming wild in the British Isles.

In the Sun newspaper dated April 16th 2005 a photograph has appeared, which, was taken by Norman Evans in a remote part of Gwent, South Wales.  Mr. Evans apparently saw the animal about 15 feet away and says it was in a pile of bird’s feathers.  He says “I was so shocked I started shaking and twitching but took two photos before I decided to run for it”.  He then sent these pictures to the British Big Cat Society who have confirmed the beast is a panther.  Society founder Danny Bumping said, “This is a really important photo.  It proves there are big cats in the wild in Britain.  This is a mature black panther”.  It is worth noting that this is not the only sighting in this area many others have occurred.

This does not actually give us hard evidence but does go a long way in proving these creatures do exist.  The only true way we will quell all the doubters is when one is finally captured and can prove beyond all doubt they are here, even then there is many of these creatures which will need to be caught before all are proven, as there are so many and span so many different species.

I would also like to add that these sightings are becoming more and more frequent, so more people are now beginning to see and report them, which helps in proving their existence.

If you have sighted any of these creatures or know of any other kinds then please let us know, either by using the Strange Creature Sightings form, by e-mail or by asking for our head office address so that you may post it to us.
