Introduction

Over recent weeks it has been brought to my attention that most people do not know the correct history of ancient Britain and only list it in three areas.   These areas are generally Celtic, Roman and Anglo-Saxon.

While yes we have these areas in our history, many myths and false notions have spread regarding some of our ancient monuments.   For instance many people I have spoken to believe that Stonehenge was Druid, this is incorrect.   This misrepresentation was due to a couple of people who did archaeological digs around this area.   First of which, was John Aubrey. Who in the late 1600’s believed that Stonehenge was Celtic in origin?   After this another by the name of William Stukeley (1730’s) promoted and pushed this idea that Stonehenge was Druid in origin. This then gave rise to the modern Druids belief in this theory.   However it should be noted that the Celtic race appears in Britain around 1000 or so years after Stonehenge was abandoned.   Stonehenge is a megalith that was started around Neolithic times and the Celtic race is Iron Age.

This misrepresentation has over time become instilled on the population of the world, due to modern day Druids still claiming the stones are theirs and also through some mythology books giving this idea.   Yes we know that today’s Druids have this association and can appreciate that they do now use them for today’s rituals. However this should not be wrongly mistaken for the history of the stones themselves, as they are much older.

Britain has many megalithic monuments for which Stonehenge is only one.   For instance Britain has Durrington Walls (which is one of the largest known), Woodhenge, Seahenge and also places like Castlerigg Circle (which is one of the nicest).   Many of these monuments are just as thrilling and fantastic as those of ancient Egypt, but for some reason are not promoted very well.

Over time I shall give you an insight into some of these areas so that you can begin to understand the true heritage of these sites, and to see how wonderful they really are.   Scotland, England,Wales and Northern Ireland have many to offer and all should be given the same consideration as the better-known Stonehenge.

It is also worth mentioning that these monuments are mysterious in more ways than people realise.

You will have noticed on the Department Index there is a timeline to help you understand and give you a rough estimate of the types of ages we shall cover.   These are only approximate dates and are there just as a guide.
